About the IBERMIS platform

The platform of aquatic invasive species in the Iberian Peninsula is an online information system that aims to locate and identify populations of invasive alien species (IAS) in the Iberian Peninsula, that mainly affect freshwater and estuarine ecosystems. In this way, the Platform contributes to increasing the possibilities of preventing their settlement and limiting their negative impacts on the environment and economy.

We invite you to use the European mobile application, EASIN for the localization of invasive alien species.

Install EASIN today and collaborate in the LIFE INVASAQUA Project! Available for IOS and Android.

Through the app, you will be able to visualize the scientific observations from citizens’ observations collected through the EASIN app and access scientific information from the database of the Iberian Society of Ichthyology (SIBIC).

The IBERMIS platform will help policymakers and scientists in their efforts to tackle alien species invasions, contributing to the implementation of the EU Regulation on invasive alien species, published in 2014 by the European Commission.

This platform is a result of the LIFE INVASAQUA project coordinated by the University of Murica with the participation of 8 partners:

The administrator of this platform is the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation with the support of the Iberian Society of Ichthyology (SIBIC).

The IBERMIS platform was launched in 2021 through an online event (video of the event, in Spanish).

How to use the IBERMIS Platform

If you find a species that you think is possibly invasive, please report it through the EASIN app to notify the experts. Take note of the location and if possible, take a photo of the species. Once verified by experts, new records will be displayed in the map viewer.

The IAS search engine

Through the search engine you may look up different invasive alien species (IAS) in the ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula. This tool has a filter to narrow down the search. Once the filtering is done, the records that match the demand will be displayed.

The following are the types of filters that have been established:

  • Regions or communities. This filter has been established for the geographic search of species according to the selected country.

  • Scientific name: Through a predictive search, it is possible to search for species through their cynological etymology.

  • Common name: As with the scientific name field, there is the possibility of filtering species by their common name, thus making the search more globalized without the need to be an expert on the subject.

  • Taxonomy:

Public resources available on the platform

In this section, you will find tools, guides, publications, references to regulations, training materials and other resources that help to raise awareness and a better understanding of aquatic invasive species in the Iberian Peninsula.

These resources are especially useful to educators, students and any other group linked to the use and recreation of rivers and estuaries.
